Their short history reads like a definitive list of music industry successes but at the beginning of the month, The Sherlocks ticked another box on the bucket list – a sold out show at the Wedgewood Rooms, Portsmouth.
The Sherlocks released their first single in 2014, played Reading and Leeds Festival in 2015, played SXSW Festival In 2016 and released their debut album, Live for the Moment, in 2017.
It’s an undoubtedly impressive timeline of achievements. The South Yorkshire quartet certainly went from 0 – 100 in the time it takes normal people to blink but whilst that’s remarkable, their inexperience is evident on stage.
Their sound is clean and polished with hints of catchy melodies but a signature identity hasn’t fully developed for the band yet. In fact the ‘FFO’ list is almost endless.
At this early stage of the bands career that can be completely forgiven but along with a USP The Sherlocks are also shy of a stage presence that could do the trick so far as setting them apart.
But The Sherlocks fire is fuelled by critical acclaim and a dedicated support system within the British music industry and those things truly don’t come without a spark, and that spark is The Sherlock’s work alone.
That spark has forged a 12-track set-list of sweetly appealing tunes that has beckoned an amazingly broad range of fans who have connected with the charming lyrics.
Motions, played eighth tonight, is a prime example of what The Sherlocks are capable of. With memorable hook lyrics coupled with honeyed harmonies and a country-esque guitar riffs – this is the path that The Sherlocks need to pursue.
Tonight The Sherlocks proved that they know what it takes to be a British mega-band, all the way down to effective staging. Colour-changing, timed strip lights on stage encompassed the band adding a decoration to their tracks that the musicians themselves aren’t quite ready to give.
So the whole package isn’t developed yet. There’s a sense of style and character yet to come, but it’s an incredibly exciting start and after tonight’s performance it’s evident that distinctiveness IS on its way.
