With Confidence – King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut – 02/03/2017 – LIVE REVIEW

If I told you that last weekend we endured a nine and a half hour coach journey to Scotland just to get a tattoo and come home again, only the reckless amongst you would nod-along in complete acceptance. To make the whole thing a little less nonsensical we hoped that we might be able to come across a fun loving, Australian pop-punk band playing in a nearby legendary venue.

As luck would have it, With Confidence were in town playing at Glasgow’s King Tut’s! We couldn’t have planned it better ourselves.

Since 2012 Sydney’s With Confidence have paid their dues supporting worldwide heavyweights like Tonight Alive, You Me At Six and Motion City Soundtrack before signing to the pop-punk success machine Hopeless Records in early 2016.

Their debut full length album, Better Weather, was released just six months later and now they’re revisiting the countries and venues that they were first in alongside their heroes.

Tonight’s set list did not include Oasis’ Wonderwall, despite the best efforts of the committed crowd, but was instead dominated by that sensational new album.

Opening track Voldemort set the relentless pace which stayed high-octane all the way through to new single, Keeper.

That insistent energy made the stark-sentimentality of Long Night all the more touching in contrast. A

beautiful acoustic offering to show what sets With Confidence apart from the rest of the pop-punk resurgence: first-class song writing.

As catchy pop-punk songs go, they don’t come more infectious than Tonight, from the 2013 EP Youth. Live, it draws you in from that first note and you can’t help but get your feet off the ground with the rest of the crowd.

Well, that and the fact that if everybody jumps at King Tut’s then the floor will make you bounce whether you like it or not.

There are a lot of reasons to love With Confidence but Jayden Seeley’s endearing vocals is at least in the top three alongside the guarantee of a good dick joke from Luke Rockets.

It feels like just the beginning for With Confidence but, for now, I’m just glad I was in the right place at the right time.
